Anaplastic Lymphoma Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (ALK) belongs to the insulin receptor superfamily and plays a vital role in brain development.
Mutations, rearrangements, and amplifications in the ALK gene are implicated in tumors such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, neuroblastoma, and non-small cell lung cancer.
The most common genetic alteration is chromosomal rearrangement, forming a fusion gene between ALK (chromosome 2) and NPM (chromosome 5), resulting in the oncogenic NPM-ALK fusion protein.
ALK is a receptor protein-tyrosine kinase with transmembrane and extracellular domains, showing high sequence similarity to LTK.
It is essential for neuronal development and function in the nervous system.
