Target Information
Ribosomes are the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of four RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
The RPLP2 gene encodes a ribosomal phosphoprotein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L12P family. It plays an essential role in the elongation step of protein synthesis.
Unlike most ribosomal proteins, RPLP2 is acidic. Its C-terminal region is nearly identical to those of ribosomal phosphoproteins P0 and P1, allowing interaction to form a pentameric complex (P1/P2 dimers and a P0 monomer).
The protein is localized in the cytoplasm, and multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
