Target Information
BAF53A is a member of actin-related proteins (ARPs), sharing significant sequence identity with conventional actins.
ARPs and actins both have an actin fold, an ATP-binding cleft, as a common feature.
ARPs are involved in cellular processes such as vesicular transport, spindle orientation, nuclear migration, and chromatin remodeling.
BAF53A encodes a 53 kDa subunit protein of the BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) complex, related to the SWI/SNF complex in yeast and Drosophila.
Together with beta-actin, it is required for maximal ATPase activity of BRG1 and for association of the BAF complex with chromatin/matrix.
Three transcript variants encoding two different protein isoforms have been described.
