Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal recognition and transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. This olfactory receptor gene is a segregating pseudogene, meaning some individuals have a functional allele while others have a nonfunctional one.
