Target Information
The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a family of secreted signaling molecules that can induce ectopic bone growth. Many BMPs belong to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. BMPs were originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo at extra-skeletal sites.
BMP7 is expressed early in embryogenesis and is proposed to play a role in early development. Its close relationship to BMP5 and BMP6 suggests possible bone inductive activity.
