Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are involved in growth and differentiation processes. BMPs were initially identified for their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a crucial role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression has been linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three transcript variants encoding an identical protein.
