Target Information
The AGT gene encodes pre-angiotensinogen (angiotensinogen precursor), mainly expressed in the liver. It is cleaved by renin in response to low blood pressure to produce angiotensin I, which is further processed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to generate angiotensin II, a physiologically active peptide.
This protein plays a key role in blood pressure regulation and is implicated in essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Mutations in AGT are associated with essential hypertension, renal tubular dysgenesis, non-familial atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
