Product Specific Information
MA1-40128 detects BPI from human samples. The immunogen is full-length human BPI.
This antibody recognizes only free BPI and does not interact with BPI that has formed a complex with LPS.
It has been successfully used in ELISA applications. Monoclonal antibody 4H5 can be used both as coating and as detector.
Target Information
The antimicrobial protein BPI is a 55 kDa protein found in the primary (azurophilic) granules of human neutrophils and also on the surface of neutrophils, small intestinal, and oral epithelial cells.
BPI is a bactericidal compound present in polymorphonuclear cells and in lower levels in eosinophils.
It binds the lipid A region of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in gram-negative bacteria, leading to:
- Cytotoxicity via damage to bacterial membranes
- Neutralization of LPS
- Opsonization enhancing phagocytosis by neutrophils
BPI may play a key role in LPS-triggered airway disease due to its expression in airway epithelial cells.
A recombinant fragment, rBPI21 (21 kDa), confers survival advantage against pneumococcal disease by binding pneumolysin from gram-positive bacteria.
