Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the folate receptor family. These receptors bind folic acid and its reduced derivatives and mediate transport of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate into cells. The gene product can be membrane-anchored via a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol linkage or exist in a soluble form. Mutations in this gene are linked to neurodegeneration due to cerebral folate transport deficiency. Multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified due to alternative promoters and splicing.
