Target Information
Albumin is a soluble, monomeric protein comprising about half of the blood serum protein content. It functions primarily as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones, and helps stabilize extracellular fluid volume. Albumin is a globular, unglycosylated serum protein with a molecular weight of approximately 65,000. It is synthesized in the liver as preproalbumin, which undergoes N-terminal peptide removal before release from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The resulting proalbumin is then cleaved in the Golgi vesicles to produce secreted albumin.
