Target Information
The subtilisin-like prohormone convertase (PC) family comprises enzymes that cleave most prohormones and neuropeptide precursors. These enzymes are also involved in the maturation of various cellular, viral, and bacterial proteins transported by the constitutive secretory pathway. PC family members share structural similarities, including:
- ~10 kDa amino-terminal proregion
- ~55 kDa conserved subtilisin-like catalytic domain
- Variable carboxyl-terminal domain in length and sequence
Enzymatic activity occurs after proregion cleavage within the correct cellular compartment. PC1 is localized to the perinuclear region and trans-Golgi network, while PC2 is found in the trans-Golgi network and diffusely in the peripheral cytoplasm.
