Target Information

Protein carboxyl methyltransferases (PCMTs) are enzymes found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, classified into three types based on methyl-acceptor substrate specificity.
The type II enzyme (PCMT1, EC 2.1.1.77) transfers methyl groups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to free carboxyl groups of D-aspartyl and L-isoaspartyl residues.
These residues result from spontaneous deamidation, isomerization, and racemization of L-aspartyl and L-asparaginyl residues, representing covalent damage sites in aging proteins.
PCMT1 functions as a protein repair enzyme, converting abnormal residues back to their normal L-aspartyl form.
