Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. BMPs are growth and differentiation factors originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis. BMP4 plays an important role in the onset of bone formation, and reduced expression is linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region yields three variants encoding the same protein.
