Target Information

Glutamine synthase is part of the glutamine synthetase family. In animals, ammonia incorporation occurs through glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthase. Glutamate plays a central role in mammalian nitrogen metabolism, acting as both a nitrogen donor and acceptor. It also regulates neurotransmitter glutamate metabolism.
Glutamine synthetase (GS) activity is tightly regulated, including by adenylylation. Its activity is decreased in the cerebral cortex of brains affected by Alzheimer’s disease and under glucose deprivation conditions.
