IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. It acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune or infectious conditions. IL-6 is expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation and mediates transcriptional responses via the interleukin 6 receptor alpha. It is associated with various inflammation-related diseases, including diabetes mellitus, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Kaposi sarcoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels have been observed in viral infections such as COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
