Target Information
IL-6 is a gene that encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen that can induce fever in autoimmune diseases or infections. It is expressed at sites of acute and chronic inflammation and induces transcriptional inflammatory responses through the interleukin 6 receptor, alpha.
This gene is implicated in various inflammation-associated diseases such as diabetes mellitus and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are found in viral infections, including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Diseases associated with IL6 include Kaposi Sarcoma and Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Juvenile.
