Target Information

Carbonic Anhydrase XI (CA11, CA XI) is a member of the carbonic anhydrases (CAs) family of zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide.
CA XI participates in biological processes such as respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid.
Although likely secreted, CA XI has radical changes at conserved active site residues, making it unlikely to have catalytic activity. It shares properties with other acatalytic isoforms CA VIII and CA X and is most abundantly expressed in the brain, suggesting a role in the central nervous system.
