Target Information
SMADs are members of the MAD-related family of intracellular proteins essential in the signaling pathways of serine/threonine kinase receptors of the TGF-beta superfamily.
They are categorized as:
- R-SMADs: SMAD1, 2, 5, 8, and 9
- Co-SMAD: SMAD4
- I-SMADs: SMAD6 and 7
SMAD1, 5, 8, and 9 share high homology, and antibodies may recognize sequences common to all. SMAD8 and SMAD9 are often used interchangeably.
Mutations in SMAD9 can lead to pulmonary hypertension, primary 2 (PPH2).
