NOX1 is a homolog of gp91phox, the catalytic subunit of NADPH oxidase in phagocytes.
Three splice variants—NOH-1L, NOH-1S, and NOH-1Lv—have been identified:
- NOH-1S: Voltage-gated proton channel regulating cellular pH, blocked by zinc
- NOH-1L: Pyridine nucleotide-dependent oxidoreductase generating superoxide
- NOH-1Lv: Variant with distinct functional features
NOX1 may be a potential target for therapeutic approaches in ischemic diseases.
