Target Information
BST2 (CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. BST2 expression on fibroblast cell lines facilitates stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines.
It is highly expressed during B-cell development, in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, DCs, and myeloma cells.
Studies show BST2 inhibits retrovirus release from human cells, counteracted by HIV-1 Vpu protein.
Its depletion removes the viral requirement for Vpu, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for HIV/AIDS.
BST2 dysfunction is also associated with stomatitis.
