Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine that acts as a regulator of various hematopoietic cells. It stimulates cell proliferation and prevents apoptosis. The cytokine functions through the interleukin 9 receptor (IL9R), activating different STAT proteins and linking it to multiple biological processes. This gene has been identified as a candidate gene for asthma, and studies in mouse models indicate its role in bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
