Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins essential for the initiation of eukaryotic genome replication.
The MCM complex (including MCM2, 6, and 7) functions as a DNA helicase and plays a key role in the pre-replication complex (pre_RC), contributing to replication fork formation and recruitment of DNA replication-related proteins.
Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces the helicase activity and chromatin binding of the MCM complex.
This gene is located near PRKDC/DNA-PK on chromosome 8, a region associated with DNA double-strand break repair.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been reported.
