Aven is a protein that blocks apoptosis induced by Apaf-1 and caspase-9. It binds to Bcl-xL (antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family) and Apaf-1, possibly interfering with Apaf-1 self-association, thereby impeding caspase activation.
Higher Aven mRNA levels are observed in acute leukemia patients, suggesting potential prognostic relevance.
