Cytokeratin 8은 제2형 케라틴 패밀리에 속하며, 염색체 12번 장완에 위치합니다. 제1형 및 제2형 케라틴은 상피세포의 세포질 내에서 중간 필라멘트를 형성하기 위해 이합체를 구성합니다. Cytokeratin 8은 일반적으로 Keratin 18과 이합체를 이루어 단층 상피세포의 중간 필라멘트를 형성합니다. 이 단백질은 세포 구조적 안정성을 유지하고, 신호 전달 및 세포 분화에도 관여합니다. 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 원인 불명의 간경변증을 유발할 수 있습니다.
