Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process occurring through nuclear pore complexes embedded in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) are imported via importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo in the cytoplasm, and importin beta docks the complex at the nuclear pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with its cargo, while importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG repeats of nucleoporins are essential for translocation.
