Target Information
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing hyperpolarization of the membrane through opening of a Cl⁻ channel associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R) subtype.
GABAA-Rs are important therapeutic targets for sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents and are implicated in diseases such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The GABAA-R is a multimeric subunit complex composed of multiple alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, including splice variants. Expression of alpha and beta subunits yields functional GABAA-R sensitive to GABA, while gamma subunit coexpression is required for benzodiazepine modulation.
Phosphorylation of beta subunits modulates receptor function.
