Target Information
SETD8 is a histone methyltransferase that specifically monomethylates Lys-20 of histone H4.
H4 Lys-20 monomethylation is enriched during mitosis and serves as a marker for epigenetic transcriptional repression.
The protein primarily functions in euchromatin regions, playing a central role in silencing euchromatic genes.
It is essential for cell proliferation, contributing to the maintenance of proper higher-order DNA structure during mitosis, and is involved in chromosome condensation and cytokinesis.
Nucleosomes are preferred as substrates compared to free histones.
