Target Information
Leukocytes adhere to the blood vessel endothelium during extravasation in postcapillary venules of lymph nodes. Leukocyte adhesion occurs in capillaries and small venules throughout the body after inflammation onset. This response involves a cascade of adhesion receptors, including selectins and immunoglobulin superfamily members.
E-selectin (CD62E) is an endothelial cell-specific selectin expressed only after activation with proinflammatory cytokines. IL-1, TNFα, and bacterial components such as lipopolysaccharides induce E-selectin transcription in an NFκB-dependent signaling cascade. E-selectin is associated with endothelium in various inflammatory conditions.
