Background
Defensin alpha 4 (DEFA4) is a member of the defensin family, which comprises antimicrobial and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. These peptides are abundant in neutrophil granules and present in epithelial tissues of the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Defensins share a conserved cysteine motif and are clustered on chromosome 8. DEFA4 differs from other family members by an additional 83-base segment, likely due to a recent duplication event. The encoded protein exhibits corticostatic activity, inhibiting corticotropin-stimulated corticosterone production.
