Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a seven-transmembrane domain structure. They are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
