Target Information
This gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5 that share structural similarity with B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters. The alpha cluster includes 15 cadherin superfamily genes, consisting of 13 closely related and 2 distantly related coding sequences. Each gene has large N-terminal exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared C-terminal exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain. These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral plasma membrane proteins that are believed to play a key role in establishing specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing and additional variants have been observed but not fully characterized.
