Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways triggered by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and IFN-γ. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and interact with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants exist but encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
