Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
The DAP3 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that participates in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-alpha, Fas ligand, and gamma interferon. This protein may bind ATP/GTP and functionally interact with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
