FOXI1 유전자는 forkhead 도메인을 특징으로 하는 전사 인자(forkhead family of transcription factors)에 속합니다. 본 유전자의 구체적인 기능은 완전히 규명되지 않았으나, 달팽이관(cochlea)과 전정기관(vestibulum) 발달 및 배아 발생 과정에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 추정됩니다.
이 유전자의 변이는 common cavity phenotype과 연관될 수 있으며, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 두 가지 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
