Target Information

GAD-65 and GAD-67, glutamate decarboxylases, catalyze the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABA activates ionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors, and a third class called GABAC receptors.
GABAC receptors mediate rapid inhibitory neurotransmission in the retina. Three human genes—GABRR1, GABRR2, and GABRR3—encode these receptor subunits. GABRR1 and GABRR2 are located on chromosome 6q, while GABRR3 maps to chromosome 3q11–q13.3. Expression of GABAC receptor subunits is found in the retina and various brain regions, particularly those associated with visual pathways.
