Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active during early embryonic development. These genes contain a paired box DNA-binding domain and regulate genetic programs essential for tissue differentiation.
PAX2 is expressed in the developing kidney, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures derived from mesenchyme. Its expression decreases as renal tubular epithelium matures but persists in undifferentiated epithelium of Wilms’ tumors, correlating with proliferation of poorly differentiated epithelial cells. WT1 tumor suppressor expression coincides with down-regulation of PAX2, suggesting WT1 may repress PAX2 transcription.
