Target Information

Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with multiple micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2. It serves as a reliable surface marker for microglia, distinguishing them from infiltrating macrophages. Microglial cells are brain-resident phagocytes involved in debris clearance and dendritic pruning, exhibiting neuroprotective and neurotoxic functions depending on environmental cues.

Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and, under pathological conditions, secrete Cq1, IL-1a, and TNF when stimulated with LPS, contributing to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Outside the neural system, Tmem119 may play a role in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
