Product Specific Information

Description:
IFN-alpha2 is a type I interferon, also known as B-cell interferon, leukocyte interferon, lymphoblast interferon, and pH2-stable interferon. It is one of at least 23 known variants of IFN-alpha, with molecular masses between 19–26 kDa and lengths of 156–172 amino acids. IFN-alpha forms are produced by monocytes/macrophages, lymphoblastoid cells, fibroblasts, and various other cell types following induction by viruses, nucleic acids, glucocorticoid hormones, and low-molecular-weight substances (e.g., n-butyrate, 5-bromodeoxyuridine). IFN-alpha2 exhibits antiviral, antiparasitic, and antiproliferative activities.

Applications Reported:
Useful for bioassay and ELISA.

Applications Tested:
Inhibition of cytopathic effect of EMC virus on L929 cells (ED50 ~0.1 ng/mL; specific activity 1×10⁷ Units/mg).

Target Information

IFN-alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon, a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Interaction with its receptor activates signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infection. In humans, the IFN-alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons include 14 alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist in many species, including rats, mice, birds, reptiles, and fish. IFN-alpha is mainly produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysfunction of IFN-alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
