Target Information

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) family of proteins share similar domain structures and are involved in transducing signals from cell surface receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. These proteins interact with multiple partners and are regulated by various stimuli. They associate with small GTPase Cdc42 and the cytoskeletal organizing complex Arp2/3, both key regulators of actin filament formation.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, inherited, X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The WAS gene product is a cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells, which exhibit signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in affected patients. A transcript variant with an alternative promoter and different 5' UTR sequence has also been described, though its full-length nature remains unclear.
