Target Information

CD36, also known as scavenger receptor class B member 3, is expressed on the surface of various cell types including macrophages, platelets, and adipocytes. It plays a key role in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. CD36 recognizes and uptakes ligands such as oxidized LDL, long-chain fatty acids, and apoptotic cells, and is implicated in malaria pathogenesis. It serves as a receptor for thrombospondin and collagen, mediating cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes. Mutations in CD36 cause platelet glycoprotein deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
