Target Information
G protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir3.1–Kir3.4) are associated with numerous neurotransmitter receptors in the brain and are abundantly expressed in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, neocortex, dentate gyrus, cerebellar cortex, and thalamus.
Also known as GIRK, Kir3 potassium channels localize to the soma, dendrites, and axons of neurons. Gβγ subunits from G protein heterotrimers regulate Kir3 channel activity by binding to cytoplasmic domains of Kir3 proteins, increasing K⁺ current when containing Gβ3 or Gβ4, and inhibiting it when containing Gβ5. Kir3 activity can also be inhibited by tyrosine phosphorylation via receptor tyrosine kinase B activation by brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
