Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the F-box protein family, characterized by an approximately 40 amino acid motif known as the F-box. F-box proteins form one of the four subunits of the ubiquitin protein ligase complex (SCFs), which function in phosphorylation-dependent ubiquitination.
The F-box proteins are divided into three classes:

  • Fbws: containing WD-40 domains
  • Fbls: containing leucine-rich repeats
  • Fbxs: containing various protein–protein interaction modules or no recognizable motifs

The encoded protein belongs to the Fbxs class and contains an F-box domain. It is highly expressed during muscle atrophy, and mice deficient in this gene are resistant to atrophy. Therefore, this protein is a potential drug target for the treatment of muscle atrophy. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding isoforms of different sizes.
