Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (TNNI3) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle, forming a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT). TnT binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex anchored by TnI binding to actin within thin filaments. Calcium binding to TnC causes structural changes that release TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction. Blood levels of TnI and TnT serve as diagnostic indicators for cardiac muscle damage and help differentiate between angina and myocardial infarction. Mutations in the TNNI3 gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM). Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro.
