Target Information
This gene belongs to the GPI family whose members encode multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase proteins involved in energy pathways. The encoded protein is a dimeric enzyme catalyzing the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate. It functions both inside and outside the cell — in the cytoplasm it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, while extracellularly it acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene may cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and severe enzyme deficiency associated with hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
