Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is believed to be involved with intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed, along with desmin, during early stages of cellular development. During development, vimentin is replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin may play a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to intermediate filament breakdown and cytoskeletal changes facilitating lipid droplet interaction with mitochondria, enhancing steroid synthesis.
