Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone that regulates body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It is approximately 16 kDa and encoded by the obese (ob) gene. Leptin is mainly secreted by adipocytes and also by stomach epithelium and placenta cells. Its receptors are highly expressed in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells. Leptin influences food intake, energy expenditure, adiposity, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth. It plays roles in obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension, and regulates fatty acid oxidation enzymes.
