Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase alpha, beta, gamma) is an enzyme involved in the glycolytic pathway, catalyzing the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily into extracellular and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) upon neuronal injury.
NSE is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, and co-expressed with chromogranin A in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Antibodies to NSE are valuable for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Clinically, NSE serves as a biomarker for neuronal damage and is elevated in conditions such as stroke, hypoxic brain injury, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and certain cancers including neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
