Target Information
Spexin hormone acts as a central modulator of cardiovascular and renal function as well as nociception. It also regulates energy metabolism and storage, inhibits adrenocortical cell proliferation, and slightly stimulates corticosteroid release.
Spexin is cleaved into two chains: Spexin-1 and Spexin-2.
- Spexin-1 serves as a ligand for galanin receptors GALR2 and GALR3. It increases arterial blood pressure, decreases heart rate and renal excretion, and induces delayed natriuresis. It also contracts muscarinic-like stomach smooth muscles and reduces food intake and body weight.
- Spexin-2 decreases heart rate without affecting arterial pressure and increases urine flow rate.
Both Spexin-1 and Spexin-2 exhibit antinociceptive activity when administered intraventricularly.
