Target Information

Spexin hormone acts as a central modulator of cardiovascular and renal function and nociception. It also plays roles in energy metabolism and storage and inhibits adrenocortical cell proliferation with minor stimulation of corticosteroid release.

Spexin is cleaved into two chains — Spexin-1 and Spexin-2.

• Spexin-1: Ligand for galanin receptors GALR2 and GALR3. Intracerebroventricular administration increases arterial blood pressure, decreases heart rate and renal excretion, and delays natriuresis. It induces contraction of muscarinic-like stomach smooth muscles and reduces food consumption and body weight. Also inhibits long-chain fatty acid uptake into adipocytes.
• Spexin-2: Administration decreases heart rate, increases urine flow rate, and induces antinociceptive activity without changing arterial pressure.
