Target Information
Beta-catenin, an adherens junction (AJ) protein, is a key component of cell-cell adhesion structures. It interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin, linking it to alpha-catenin and anchoring the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, and participates in signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.
Its regulation of morphogenesis and cell proliferation underlies its role in tumorigenesis, including pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors to stimulate genes such as cyclin D and c-myc.
